colossians 3, putting off and putting on

Read Colossians 3 at Bible Gateway.

There are two interesting chiastic structures in the middle of Col 3:

Col 3:5-9, Putting Off
1a) Col 3:5a, Put to death earthly members;
1b) Col 3:5b, Fornication, uncleanness, improper affection, evil appetites, covetousness/ idolatry;
central axis) Col 3:6-7, “Because of these things the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience: in which you also once walked, when you lived in them;”
2b) Col 3:8-9a, Put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy talk of your mouth, lying;
2a) Col 3:9b, Seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds.

The reason that it is appropriate and possible for us to now put off these old man deeds, is that the old man is dead, a new man being risen to new life, which is hidden with Christ in God (Col 3:1-4). Let what is dead, be dead. We…
